STAFFORD - On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Stafford High School indoor track team competed in the H-K Invitational, hosted at the New Haven Athletic Center – Hillhouse High School. With more than 40 schools registered to participate, the Bulldogs faced opponents from several statewide rivals.
Under head coach Mark Dunn, the team showed well overall. “It was a really long day; we left here at 7:30 in the morning and did not get home until after 8. All of our meets are in New Haven, and the travel really factors in. The weather has really cut into our schedule this year, too. We’ve had a lot of rescheduling to do,” said Dunn.
In the recent competition, pole vault competitor Allison Bruce took fourth in the girls’ division. “Allison is one of our best athletes,” Dunn said. “She really takes practice and competition seriously. She finished well Saturday; there were at least 30 or 40 girls in that group.”
Bruce had previously qualified for the NCC conference meet scheduled for Feb. 7 with fellow teammates Jen Bourque, Julie Dillon, Amanda Jacobsen, Vanessa Knowlton, Ashleigh Lamoureux, Shaina Wilson, Karen Shirk and Kianna Woods.
Equally as impressive at the weekend meet, Chris Mitta placed third in the pole vault for the boys’ division. Mitta previously qualified for both the NCCs and the state Class S meet with a jump of 11’6”.
Included in the boys’ division NCC qualifiers are Peter Molitoris, Evan Cummins, Shaun Cummins, Joe Direnzo, Tom Dziewa, Andrew Miller, Kainen Moscato and Tom Szymanski.
Looking forward, Dunn is drawing the team’s focus to the championships. “We’re working hard, and will compete at the conference championships on the 7th and hopefully qualify more athletes for the state S meet on Thursday, Feb. 10.”
