STAFFORD - The Stafford Alliance for Food and Fuel held its third annual “Souper Bowl on Saturday” at the Stafford Community Center on Jan. 22. The snow-or-shine event to benefit Stafford Family Services’ food and fuel banks offered a bowl of soup, served with crusty bread and a beverage at a cost of $15 per person, $20 per couple and $25 for families.
“It’s been such a tough winter weather-wise, we’ll probably allocate most of the funds to fuel this year,” said SAFF member Karen Troiano. “People just can’t keep up with the fuel bills, given the current high costs of oil and gas. In some cases, we may help people pay their electric bills, as well.”
Local singer and guitarist Deb Kmetz, along with a pair of sidemen, provided entertainment throughout the two-hour luncheon. Members of the Stafford Arts Commission were also on hand to help Pat Saunders prepare and serve the meal.
Also available for sale as part of the fundraising effort was the 2011 “Reflections of Stafford” calendar.
Among those enjoying the lunch were Esther and Ronnie DaRos. “We got here early,” Esther said with a smile. “We have to be home in time for the game!” The UConn men were taking on Tennessee that afternoon.
Stafford Family Services will receive the proceeds from the lunch and allocate the money to those most in need. If you would like to make a contribution, donations may be sent to 21 Hyde Park Road, Stafford, CT, 06076. For more information, call 860-684-4239.
