GLASTONBURY - After cruising to a 77-45 win over Rockville last week, the Glastonbury High School varsity boys’ basketball team improved to 9-2, already matching its win total from last year.
Coach Jim Vaughan said he is impressed by his team’s ability to adapt to its opponents, regardless of the game situation.
“They’ve been doing the same kind of stuff since the beginning of the year,” Vaughan said. “We’ve played against a lot of different teams with a lot of different styles and different defenses, and they’ve always been able to respond.”
Vaughan expected his mostly-veteran squad to perform well, but has also been surprised by some of the up-and-coming players, including sophomore guard Kevin Shippey.
Opposing teams are keying on GHS’s Nico Donato, who is averaging about 18 points per game, but the Tomahawks’ strategy is able to counter those double-teams.
“We just work on it every day,” Vaughan said. “We add more movement – getting the ball to those open areas.”
With a tough schedule, the Tomahawks record hasn’t exactly been a cake-walk. Six of their games have been decided by 10 points or less, and Vaughan said there are plenty of things the team hasn’t done well, even in its wins, and depth across the roster is key.
“Those things are going to happen,” he said. “You can’t play perfect all of the time. We just have to keep getting good contributions from our bench.”
