Members of the East Hartford High School varsity swim team are hoping to distinguish themselves in their division in the upcoming finals. The team had a number of rookies, and it was the first year for coach Jill Piedescalzo.
The team practices six days a week, Monday through Friday, and on Saturday mornings.
“It’s been tough – there were a lot of snow days – but it's been a great season,’’ said Piedescalzo. “We have a great group of kids who listen well and push themselves. They have a great work ethic, and they take it seriously.’’
Piedescalzo said the team will be up against some of the best teams in the state. “We are in a very tough division –[ our ]division is the fastest, and we will be competing against some very talented teams.’’
Sports Spotlight: Players to Watch
Brian Futtner, 16, is a junior who is in his third year on the team. Two of his events are 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 individual medley. “I think this season has been a learning process. This was the coach’s first year and we have a lot of rookies. There has been a lot of improvement, people have definitely grown, and I have seen that in myself," said Futtner.
Ryan Frey, 17, is a senior who has been on the team for four years. His events are 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. “This team got much better as the season passed, and we will be building on what we have learned for next year. In the beginning, I didn’t think we would be as far as we are right now. I don’t think our record reflects what we have accomplished,’’ said Frey.
