The Griswold High School boys’ indoor track team boasts a relay team of Eastern Connecticut Conference champions this year.
Seniors James Strmiska, Jon Choiniere and Jon Finley, along with junior Zac James, claimed the ECC championship in the 4 x 800-meter race Feb. 6 at the Coast Guard Academy. The quartet went on to win third place at the state Class S meet Feb. 10-12 in New Haven, where they clocked their best time of the season, at 8:23.88.
“The ECC was, as a whole, way down talent-wise,” said coach Christopher Morth. “The boys’ meet lacked the drama that the girls’ meet had.”
Other teams, such as Stonington, had more of what Morth termed “raw, talented athletes.”
“We weren't as prepared as we wanted to be, but we had better weapons to use,” said Morth of his team. “They got the job done. They went in there and took control.”
The Wolverines’ four runners were seeded 11th in the State Open meet Feb. 19 in New Haven, and ended up placing 13th at that competition.
“Indoor track doesn't really have a regular season in the same sense as most sports,” said Morth. “All our regular season meets are just used as qualifiers, tune-ups for our end-of-season championship meets.”
Track and field fans can look forward to seeing the indoor champions, along with fellow senior Taylor Elkins, compete outdoors in the coming months as track and field season gets underway the first week of April. Team conditioning is ongoing, but the first officially scheduled day of practice is Monday, March 21.
