“Absolutely fantastic,’’ is the way East Hartford High School swimming coach Jill Piedescalzo describes her team’s performance in the Class LL state championship held in Hamden.  The team placed 14th out of 20 this year, compared with its 17th out of 20 placement last year.

One diver, Devin Clark continued on to the final in the state open. The team shaved two seconds from their previous record in the 200 medley relay, three seconds from the 200 freestyle, and 13 seconds from the 400 relay.  Kevin Derohanian, Nolan Callahan, Ian Pettigrew, Clay  Margelony and Pat Shea swam the relays for the team.

“I think they were just really ready for it.  It was a big meet, they were excited, and for the seniors it was their last chance to really deliver," said Piedescalzo. "They have been working hard all season, and it showed.’’

Spotlight Players:

Devin Clarke – diver – Devin Clarke won a gold medal for first place in diving and placed fifth out 35 divers overall in the state championships.  A senior, Clarke has been on the team for four years, and has made it to the state finals in each of those years. His best dive is a forward with two somersaults and a pike.

“It felt good I was excited – the team did well, its best we have ever done. In the end, everyone pulled it together. ‘’Clarke also came in first and second place during championship meets in the last few weeks. “I guess I’m just on a winning streak,’’ he said.

Sheldon Walters – diver- Sheldon Walters, a sophomore, is in his second year with the team, He has placed first in one diving event and placed 15 out of 35 divers overall. “It was rough in the beginning of the season – it took us a while to get used to things and get it together, but we did.  I like diving because of the feeling of being in the air and flipping and hitting the water,’’ he said.
