With only a few days of practice before their first scrimmage, East Hartford High School boys' volleyball coach Janice May has been conducting tryouts and will begin making the cuts and selecting her team for the upcoming season. “We’ll be playing Wolcott Tech this week – it’s early for a scrimmage, but that’s the way our schedule works," she said.

May has been a volleyball coach for 18 years and is in her 6th season coaching the team. Her assistant coach is Martin Martinez. ‘We have only a few returning seniors, so I am going to be relying on them to impart their wisdom to the rest of the team,’’ said May. “That’s why I have them working one-on-one, someone new with someone who was on the team last year.’’

Watching the players go through practice drills, May was preparing to make her decision as to who makes the team. “We’ve had a large number of people turnout. We are going to have to make some cuts today," she said on March 23.

The team will be facing some well-prepared challengers in just a few weeks, she said. “Newington, West Hartford, Enfield – they are all good teams, very formidable opponents. So right now we are working on fundamentals – moving their feet, paying attention and passing better.’’

May said she will be looking at a player's attitude as much as their skills. “If somebody really wants to be here, that’s half the battle,’’ she said. “If you have a good work ethic – everything else we can teach you.’’

Sports Spotlight: Players to Watch

Tylor Holcomb, senior – “We got better as the season got going last year. We don’t have much time, only five days of practice before our first scrimmage. And we’ve lost a lot of players from last year. So right now, we’re working on the fundamentals like bump and set. The main thing is we’re better when we know each other, and start talking and communicating with each other. So we’re looking for better teamwork, more communication and more wins.”

Linio Lam, senior – “Last year was pretty good, we got it together as time went on. Right now we’re looking for more teamwork – not just playing out there as an individual. We’ll need to get better at passing and hitting. Since we only have a few seniors from last year, we just have to start with the basics, and the goal is just to win more games.”
