In recent weeks, every Cub Scout den in town has held a Pinewood Derby, in which the Scouts raced the model wooden cars that they had built, decorated and named. Each pack is divided into dens by age group: Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos 1 and Webelos 2. After the winners of each of the den races were determined, those winners faced off to name an overall pack winner.

The four Cub Scout packs in South Windsor– 186, 389, 390 and 886 – all sent their top pack winners to the second annual Mayor’s Cup Pinewood Derby race, to determine which Scout had the town’s fastest car.

The March 21 race was held at Town Hall and was overseen by Mayor John Pelkey, who helped to establish the race last year.

The winner of all four heats and the new Mayor’s Cup Pinewood Derby champion was Ryan Dunia of Pack 886, with his car, “Gold Rush.”

Dunia is a member of Pack 886’s Wolf Den, and his den leader is Ellen Griswold.

Second place went to Philip Ayotte of Pack 186, with his car, “Red Baron.” Aaron Matus of Pack 389 came in third, with his car, “Blue Cobra.” Ryan Murray of Pack 390, and his car, “Go Green,” placed fourth.

Pack 886 Cubmaster Brian Wylie MCed the races, which were all very close.

Last year’s winner was Andrew Smith, also from Pack 886.
