“We finally have a good day out here,” said East Hartford High School varsity baseball coach Mike McDermott, referring to the spring sunshine and comfortable temperatures last week that followed days of practicing in cold weather. “It’s been brutal out here.”

McDermott has been coaching East Hartford varsity baseball since 1995, and he has been involved in baseball in town since 1979. “I love working with a team and being a coach,” he said. His assistant coaches are Dan Caitlin and Chris Sparks.

This year, McDermott is coaching a team of 11 players, with six of them returning juniors and seniors. The coach said he would be counting on every member of the team to deliver this season. “With only 11 players, we can’t afford any injuries,” he added.

“We have really good pitching depth this year – that's something we haven't always had,” McDermott said. “We have Tyler Estevez, Taylor Prattson and Alan Schiff – very dynamic players.”

“They’re a good group – they get along well together,” the coach added. “I’m expecting a lot out of them.”

The team was eliminated early in the post-season play last season, but the coach said that the team is putting past experience behind them. “I’m expecting a better year. I’m optimistic,” McDermott said. “Our pitching is solid, and if we're playing good defense, that’s what we need. We just have to find out now if we can hit.”

Spotlight Players-

Joel Roman – Captain, Junior, Shortstop: Roman will be the starting shortstop this year, and as a returning junior, he will put his leaderships skills to use to help the team. “We made it to the states last year – the idea is to go even further this year,” he said. “We have to hustle and work hard, work together as a team. That's all we need.”

Tyler Estevez – Captain, Senior, Center Field, Starting Pitcher: “We have two returning seniors, and two juniors, so we have a lot of experience as long we can hit and play defense,” he said. “We made it to the states last year, but we lost in the first round. So our goal is to not only make it to the states again this year, but to make it further.”
