Marianapolis give Putnam a chilly reception, 6-1

The snow started flying just as the Marianapolis-Putnam softball scrimmage got underway on March 31. Marianapolis was able to drive in six runs to Putnam’s one by the time it ended.
Coach Eric Riemann thought his two pitchers did very well. Junior Sara Morrow faced nine batters in three innings. She had six strikeouts, no hits and no walks. His freshman pitcher, Jill Bodreau, allowed only one run.
“We’re really deep this year,” Riemann said. “Both pitchers were throwing strikes. They didn’t get rattled. They threw a number of pitches. It was a really good first outing for them.” He intends to rely on the combination Sara Morrow/Jen Lutz and Jill Bodreau/Shannon Madden for his pitching and catching. Morrow and Lutz have been playing together for three years. It looks like Riemann intends for Bodreau and Madden to follow in their footsteps. “Jill and Shannon will get to know each other by working out together all the time,” he said.
“I was a little disappointed today in our three and four hitters. They’re very good hitters. Last year, Jen was a batting champion, with over .500, and Sara was over .400. We have really good speed at the top of the lineup. We have batters that can hit the ball all the way through, and we have three kids on the bench that are really strong hitters. We’re the deepest we’ve ever been this year. We have a lot of bench strength.”
Senior Alyson Stolz will play first and senior Alyssa McGlaughlin will play third. Junior Chelsea Freishlag, a three year starter, will cover second base. Freshman Jill Bodreau will play short stop, unless Riemann calls on her to pitch.
Freshman Miranda Lazzara will be in right field, and junior Jocelyn Cacciapuoti will be in left. Senior Mary McGinn will play center field. “She’s got great range and great speed,” Riemann said.
Head Coach: Eric Riemann
Thoughts on the season: “The last three years we’ve made the playoffs and got knocked out in the first round. That was really lack of bench strength. This year we’ve got a lot of depth and we have experienced players. We’ve got a lot of options.”
Seniors and Captains: Alyssa McGlaughlin, Mary McGinn, Alyson Stolz
Spotlight on pitching
Junior Sara Morrow will see a lot of time pitching for Marianapolis in the WNEPSGSBA league. Her catcher, Jen Lutz, is also a junior. They have been playing together for years.
Freshman Jill Bodreau will pitch this season, with freshman Shannon Madden catching for her. They'll be working out together all the time, Riemann said. "They’ll get to know each other," he said.
