Pitchers and catchers reported for practice during the second week of March at Stafford High School. With fields still recovering from harsh winter weather, eager Bulldogs began conditioning inside the school gymnasium. Pitchers stood on make-shift mounds and hurled the first throws of the season to expectant catchers in full gear. The weather may not have cooperated, but the Bulldogs’ spirit was not dampened.
Entering his sixth season with the Bulldogs, coach Scott Martin is looking forward to a strong season. “These kids are working hard to get better each and every single day,” he said. Looking to improve on last year’s 11-11 record, Martin recognized the team’s need to work on building the skills of new players. “We lost eight players last year, four of which were starters. We’re continually trying to improve at all aspects of the game.”
Opening the season on April 2, away against Enfield, Martin looked ahead to the rest of this season’s competition. “All of our conference games are key to our success this year. It is an equal playing field all around,” he said.
Martin commented on the important role veteran players will have in this year’s season. “We’ll have quite a bit of experience at key positions,” he said. “We should also have great pitching depth and ability to get on base.”
Returning players Ben Smith, Joe Direnzo, Everett Palozej and Brandon McCloskey were singled out by Martin as players to watch. On the pitching side, he pointed out the strong arms of Tony Bachiochi, Zach Rollins, Tim Artruc and Tim Ford, supported at the plate by catchers Trevor Blanchard and Emerson Dolby.
