The Vernon Police Department promoted three of its finest in a short ceremony in front of family, friends and fellow officers on April 13 at the Vernon police station.
Sgt. William Meier III was promoted to lieutenant, and officers Gary Jonas and Dan Champagne were promoted to sergeant.
“It’s a big day for our department,” said Chief James Kenny. “It’s one of the pleasures as a police chief to be able to stand before you and promote, in this case, three of our officers.”
Kenny said the three promotions were “a long time coming,” and thanked the officers for their patience.
“It's a big step in their careers,” Kenny said. “They'll be leaving, in some cases, the comfort of the rank of patrol officers, and they're going to be joining the ranks of supervisors.”
Of Meier, Kenny said that he was proud to have one of his officers join the command ranks.
“I'm very happy with that,” he said, adding that the department is, along with the promotions, doing some restructuring within the ranks.
“Bill is going to be a part of that,” Kenny said, “as well as the two sergeants. They are going to be playing a crucial role in running this department.”
Kenny said the rank of sergeant is one of the most important in police work, and was one of his favorites.
“You get to be out there on the street, working with officers,” he said. “I challenged my sergeants. I challenged them to start training them to become sergeants to replace them. That's the challenge I've given to Bill. Of course I'm sure he's already planning to replace me. He'll have to wait a couple more years.”
Kenny said a goal of the department is to continually bring qualified people into positions of rank, in order to continue the operation of the department in the future.
Town Clerk Bernice Dixon swore in the officers, and, in keeping with tradition, the officers’ spouses pinned on their new badges.
“The spouse is a very big part of being a police officer,” Kenny said.
Kenny also noted that Meier recently became a father. His wife, Colleen, gave birth to William Meier IV last week.
