According to Enfield High School boys’ outdoor track and field coach Todd Cunha, sprinting has been the team’s strength for the last eight years or so.

“We definitely have some speed,” he said. One bright spot is the 4x100m relay team consisting of brothers Andrew and Matthew Buanno, Kyle Casey and Adrian Kluk. Last year’s 4x100 team won first at the state meet, and this year’s team is in a great position to repeat. The 4x400m relay team - Andrew Buanno, Dylan Zimmerman and brothers Kyle and Michael Casey - have also qualified for the state meet.

Rachel Shuttleworth is the girls’ coach but helps coach the boys’ team’s sprinters. “We have a great chance at winning NCCC’s right now,” she said.

Winning meets is determined by points, and the more athletes who finish in top positions, the more points the team accumulates. Cunha said he has some young sprinters that are rounding out those top places, making the team more competitive.

“The throwers are also picking up the slack,” Cunha said, helping with total meet points. He said the team is still somewhat raw in that area, but is developing. He is also working to gain a presence in the pole vault.

The one area where the team needs improvement is in middle- and long-distance races. “I’d like to see more kids try or develop [in those distances],” Cunha said.

During last year’s season the team started adding more weight training to its practices. Tom Thompson, the EHS football coach and outdoor track throwing coach, developed the program, and Cunha said it seems to be working well.

In addition to talent, Cunha said the team keeps a positive attitude. “They’re a fun bunch of kids,” he said. “No one seems to be out for individual glory; they enjoy winning as a team.”

Number of seasons: 9

The season ahead: The boys’ track team gains most of its strength from its sprinters, but coach Cunha said the team as a whole is in a solid spot to contend for the league title.

Spotlight Players-

Andrew Buanno - Senior, Captain, Sprinter: Buanno competes in the 100m and 200m events and anchors the 4x100m relay. He has been to nationals twice in indoor track and has a goal to do the same for outdoor. He and the relay team look to defend their 2010 state title.

Kyle Casey - Junior, Captain, Sprinter: Casey runs indoor track and plays soccer, which keep him in shape for the season. His coach said he has improved in the 400m event this year and has already qualified for state in this event.

Ryan Sadosky – Junior, Thrower: Sadosky competes in all three throwing events but is best at shot put. He qualified for state in that event, with a distance of 41’-7.5”. To stay in shape, the throwers not only lift weights, but also do sprint workouts to strengthen their lower bodies.
