Muddy infields and puddle-soaked outfields have been common at Windsor High School this spring, but that does not stop the junior varsity Lady Warriors softball players; they get dirty and practice hard.
On April 13, despite the gloomy weather, Coach Allison Murphy led the girls through infield/outfield practice, stressing the importance of communication both on and off the field. “You have to talk to each other out there,” she yelled from her position at home plate. “You’re a team; teams listen to each other.”
Commenting on her new squad, Murphy recognized the important role first-year players will have this season. “We have a strong freshmen class with a lot of experience,” she said. “We should be able to be competitive in every game.”
Murphy is approaching upcoming rival games with optimism. “It’s tough to know who your hardest games will be against on junior varsity, because each year you get a new crew of girls. Glastonbury, Wethersfield and South Windsor are usually pretty good and are games my girls are looking forward to playing,” the coach said.
Pitching will be an integral part of the team’s success, according to Murphy. “Macy Fenlason, one of our pitchers, is a great competitor and puts forth great effort every time she takes the mound,” she said. “You can always see it in Mary’s eyes - she’s there to win.”
At the plate, Murphy expects the team’s top hitter, Gillian Flynn, to have a standout season. “Gillian is a great field player with an amazing arm and also one of our strongest hitters,” Murphy said. “Gillian has a great eye at the plate and a powerful swing to match.”
Murphy said the team’s combined experience may be its greatest strength. “Many of the girls have played through their middle school team,” she said. “Some of the girls also play through the summer in leagues orchestrated by the town.”
