Taking the softball field at Suffield High School on April 27, the Stafford High School Lady Bulldogs began their junior varsity match-up against the Lady Wildcats with infield practice, and a lot of enthusiasm. Encouraging each other from the first swings of the bat until the final out, the team painted a vivid picture of Stafford’s softball future.

Returning for her 13th season, coach Kim Soucy is encouraged by what she has seen so far, and maintains a positive outlook on the schedule ahead. “We have an excellent freshman pitcher, Emily Bradway. She does a great job and will be a big part of our successes,” Soucy said. “I’m also expecting quality at-bats from Jenna Eaton, Haley Richards, Allie Morgan, Suzhaunna Lerch, Kelsey Moulton and Emily Bradway.”

Soucy recognized the importance of building each player's individual skill set at the junior varsity level. “Rather than keeping girls in the same position for most of the season,” she said, “I am moving around several girls each game. There are about four or five utility players. They are doing a very good job in several positions. I am hoping this will help them to be able to fit into any varsity position when they move up.”

Coming off a 6-4 record in 2010, the team has battled continual scheduling issues due to weather, managing to complete four games so far - leaving them at 2-2. “With all the rainouts, one of our goals is just to get in our 14 games,” Soucy said.

Soundly defeating Suffield 20-8, the team will move on to face upcoming competition from Parish Hill on May 16 at home, Goodwin Tech May 17 at home, and Coventry May 18 at home. A complete schedule can be found on www.casciac.org.

Spotlight Players-

Suzhaunna Lerch – Sophomore, Captain, #6: Starting at second, Lerch is described by Soucy as a strong defensive player with aggressive base running and a continually positive attitude. “I like being part of a team,” Lerch said. “We have a lot of fun together.” Additionally, she plays field hockey and follows the Boston Red Sox.

Kelsey Moulton – Sophomore, Captain, #22: Playing shortstop for the first time this season, Soucy is impressed with Moulton’s performance thus far, as well as her ability to switch hit. “I’m having a good time this year,” Moulton said. “We laugh a lot.” Another Sox fan, Moulton has been playing softball for seven years.
