Beth Stafford, CEO of Manchester Area Conference of Churches, was recently given the Women in Business Award from the Hartford Business Journal. Stafford was one of the eight senior-level executives, CEOs and entrepreneurs from the Hartford area who were recognized at the eighth annual Women in Business luncheon on May 5.

For Stafford, winning the award is significant to her personally, because it is recognition for the work she does in the field she loves. She has been a social worker since 1977, working in a variety of community-based organizations and health-care facilities. She recognizes that her experience, as well as her mentors, led her to the role of the faith-based social services agency that is MACC.

In contemplating what unique qualities or accomplishments caused the Hartford Business Journal to recognize her with the award, Stafford noted, “I believe I have been a good student. I treasure everything I have learned and continue to learn from my peers and the nonprofit industry. Hartford Foundation for Public Giving provided MACC with a multi-services grant over multiple years that helped the MACC board and me transform a good organization into a great one, with a focus on running the organization like a business.”

She also credits receiving a master of management degree from Cambridge and her involvement with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the United Way’s Day of Caring. “All of these associations, and being fortunate to work in the social services, have shaped who I am as a business woman in leadership,” explained Stafford. “I love the opportunities and challenges of helping people, and I have learned from the best in the industry.”
