Close to 700 Thompson residents turned out for a “Night at the Races” at Thompson International Speedway on Thursday, May 12. During an event sponsored by the Thompson Recreation Department and the Thompson International Speedway, residents were able to get into the grandstands free of charge for opening night action. Drivers from six divisions in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competed on opening night.
The Limited Sportsman Division 20-lap race started the evening off with a bang.
“The first lap or two of that race got pretty interesting,” said Director of Operations Russ Dowd. By the halfway point of the race, four cars were out of the event. “We don’t like to admit it,” Dowd said, “but racing can be a contact sport.” Most of the cars were able to be driven away.
Larry Barnett won the Limited Sportsman division and cashed in on a beefed-up purse, complements of extra sponsorship money.
Keith Rocco was the winner of the 30-lap Sunoco Modified division, Thompson’s premier division. An additional $2,000 was added to the purse, courtesy of LaFramboise Well Drilling, Inc. Rocco faced 10 other drivers in the race.
Winners in the other divisions were Danny Field, Mini Stock division; Jay Sundeen, Thompson Modified division; Derek Ramstrom, Super Late Model division; and Rick Gentes, Late Model division.
