The Rockville Community Alliance will be taking a larger role in this year's ‘July in the Sky’ event, which was jokingly referred to as ‘June in the Sky,’ as the event will fall on June 30.

RCA President Jim Sendrak said that the group has had a desire to become more involved with the event, and since the Rockville Downtown Association (which deals more with businesses and development, while the RCA concentrates more on residents and community) is undergoing changes and will be unable to participate, the RCA will step in to lend a hand with the downtown portion of the festivities.

Big Daddy's Racing, which provides slot racing, video games and other activities, has already been hired for the event by the Parks and Recreation office, Sendrak said, and will be assisted by the RCA.

Several moon-bounce inflatables will also be at the event, with chances for other groups to benefit, as well.

"We came up with the unique idea to help other organizations in town,” Sendrak said, adding that the opportunity for other groups to sponsor one of the “bounce houses” could be mutually beneficial.

“We charge them a little money for it [to cover the rental],” he said, adding that sponsors will run the attraction and post signage, while being able to charge for the ride, and make some money for their organization.

“The bi-product is that people will see a very exciting downtown area, with a lot of groups and a lot of people participating in the event,” he said.

Vendors and food novelties will also be part of the downtown event, and Rockville merchants will have business opportunities. Sendrak said he hopes the local restaurants and stores will consider unique promotions and make use of the large crowds expected.

Sendrak said suggestions and feedback are always welcome, and anyone looking for more sponsorship information may contact the RCA through its website at
