In his second year as head coach for the Suffield High School boys’ track, Dom Casolari approached the season with high hopes. “When we started, I could see right away several of the kids were really going to step it up this season and show me great things,” he said, “and I have not been disappointed.”
Casolari commented on the team’s overall performance. “I have coached cross-country here for seven years in addition to track, and throughout this season I have seen some athletes make great strides,” he said. “My goal was for the team to remain competitive through the season, and hopefully finish in the top three.”
“Last year we lost a few of our seniors, but I don’t think that impacted us very much this season,” the coach said. “We have had some of our jumpers show a great deal of improvement. Unfortunately, one of our top pole vaulters, Bruce MacKay, had an ankle fracture.”
Wildcat rivalries run deep. “We are a very competitive group,” Casolari said. “I would say our hardest match-ups came against Coventry, Canton and Ellington. Each team gives us very strong competition, and our runners and field teams continue to have strong showings against each.”
Distance has been the Wildcats’ greatest strength. “By far I have seen the best results from our distance runners like Dan Moroney,” Casolari said. “I would say the 800, mile and 2 mile are some of our strongest events. Our sprinters are a much stronger group than in years past, as well. Peter Zaffetti came out strong right from the beginning.”
Entering the CIAC tournament, the Wildcats were scheduled to begin competition June 1 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain. A complete schedule and standings, including qualifiers, can be found at www.casciac.org.
