The Manchester Art Association awarded Keith Nielson its 2011 scholarship during MAA’s “Art in the Park” art show and craft fair, held on June 5 in the Center Memorial Park.

Nielson, a Manchester resident and 2011 graduate of East Catholic High School, will be attending the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., with a major in business of art and design. Nielson has studied art at the Connecticut Art School in South Windsor since 2003.

“I worked really hard to get into this college,” said Nielson. Ringling is one of the few colleges that offer a major in business of art and design. Nielson received more than $50,000 in grants through a DreamWorks scholarship through Ringling, a scholarship for the major and an alumni-funded scholarship. “And this one just tops it all off,” said Nielson about the $500 grant from MAA.

According to MAA Scholarship Chairman Sue Hollister, MAA has offered the scholarship program for four years, funded through events such as “Art in the Park.” The scholarship is awarded to a resident of Connecticut graduating from a high school located in Manchester, South Windsor, East Hartford, Glastonbury, Bolton, Coventry or Hebron. The student must be accepted in a four-year, accredited college with the intent to pursue an education in the visual arts. Applications are accepted in the spring.
