South Windsor High School honored its top student-athletes on June 6 at the Spring Sports Awards Night, held at the SWHS auditorium. Coaches and team members from the following spring sports were represented: baseball, boys’ golf, lacrosse, softball, boys’ volleyball, tennis, and track and field.
Athletic Director Christine Wanner opened the ceremony, acknowledging the 33 athletes who earned All-Conference honors. “These accomplishments are not possible without a lot of people,” said Wanner, referring to the dedicated athletes, coaches, parents and families. “I want to commend our volunteer coaches,” she added.
Baseball coach Mike Bullock introduced his team’s two All-Conference players, third baseman Anthony Garcia and pitcher/shortstop Pete Haggerty. Softball’s All-Conference players included captains Caitlyn Holik, Stephanie Rahm and Victoria Thompson.
The boys’ volleyball team achieved the CCC East championship title for the first time in the school’s history. Outside hitter Jason George, middle hitter Sam Turek, senior captain Kyle Waters and senior captain Ben Zandonella led the team as All-Conference athletes. It was also announced that Zandonella had been invited to play at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association's senior all-star game.
Boys’ track and field coach Peter Anthony listed the accomplishments of his senior All-Conference athletes, Michael Figueiredo, Brendan Gauthier and Will Moran. “Mike did very well in the sprints,” said Anthony, and Moran reached 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump. Gauthier placed second in the 800-meter race at the Randy Smith JI Greater Manchester Invitational Meet.
Number-one boys’ tennis player Sohil Khurana was the team’s sole All-Conference athlete. In girls’ tennis, four athletes were named All-Conference, including the number-four singles player, junior Katie Marlin; number-three singles player, senior Andie Earwaker; number-two singles player, co-captain junior K.C. Karasinski; and number-one singles player, co-captain junior Lauren Schmidt.
Girls’ outdoor track coach Clint Bowman listed his team’s six All-Conference athletes, including senior discus thrower Alisha Barret, pole vaulter Maddie O’Brien, senior high jumper Preethi Vaidyanathan, senior co-captain sprinter Cheyanne Genga, pole vaulter Kirsten Warner and freshman Maxine Offiaeli. Bowman noted that it is very unusual for a freshman to be named All-Conference.
Senior captain Rebecca Libutti of the girls’ lacrosse team was named All-Conference and also named to the senior all-star game. In addition, sophomores Tori Russo, a midfielder, and goalie Meg Brault were All-Conference athletes.
The boys’ team, which finished the season as CCC East conference champions, had five All-Conference athletes, including Connor Hibbs, John Maura, Sean Doolady, Troy Kremidas and Gregg Pendergast.
Coach L.B. Gray of the boys’ golf team had two All-Conference athletes: junior Clark Robinson and senior Cal Hedberg. He noted that Hedberg made All-Conference for all four years of his high school career.
“We have also been given, as a school, the 2010-2011 Northern Conference Sportsmanship Award,” said Wanner. “That speaks volumes on how you present yourself.”
