One of the most unique dog registration drives in the state has become one of the most fun events held in Windsor each year.

The 15th annual “Just For Fun” Dog Show will be held across the street from the farmers’ market on June 23, beginning with registration at 5:30 p.m.

Town Clerk Agnes Pier, whose department sponsors the event, said it was started several years ago by the previous town clerk to help encourage registration of dogs with the town clerk’s office.

“Right around this time of the year, there are ads out all over the place from town clerks that are looking for people to register their animals for the upcoming year,” said Pier. “This event is a lot more fun.”

She said the dog show has brought out more and more dogs every year, and the results have translated into more and more registrations.

Pier said the trend of people not registering their dogs has been a problem across the state, and has not been unique to Windsor.

“I think we register about 3,000 dogs every year in Windsor,” said Pier. “But there are probably about 3,000 more that should be getting registered. Registering dogs is one of those things that people just do not feel a need to do.”

But bringing dogs out to a dog show is something many dog lovers enjoy doing.

“Dog owners love to show off their animals,” said Pier.

The event starts with a judging by several local volunteers. There is a small, medium, and large category, along with a stuffed animal category for children. But every entrant receives a blue ribbon. The only requirement for the dogs is to have a 2011 dog license and a leash.

Residents outside of Windsor are also welcome to participate. Pier estimates there will be at least 250 dogs at the event this year.

“We continue to get more participants, and what’s nice is the dogs are all very well-behaved,” said Pier.

Volunteers for the event include town staff and volunteers from the Windsor Animal Clinic and the Kennedy Road Veterinary Clinic.
