The Killingly junior league All-Star baseball team will enter the championship game on Friday, July 15, with an undefeated record. The team defeated Woodstock(final score 4-10), Putnam (6-0), Norwich(11-9), and Willington/Ashford/Chaplin-Hampton (7-14) to maintain their position in the winners’ bracket and advance to the final game.

“We’ve had a good run,” said team member Derek Grzysiewicz, during the July 9 game against WACH. The only nail-biting moment, according to team member Cory Sipos, came during the final inning against Norwich.

After their relief pitcher loaded the bases, it looked like the close game would go the way of the Norwich team. “But then he got them, one, two, three,” said Sipos. Killingly ended up taking the Norwich team by a final score of 11-9. “Nick [Hewitt] got a home run earlier in the game,” said Sipos. “That really helped us to win.”

Strong pitching by Hewitt helped to keep the WACH offense in check during the July 9 game. WACH pitcher Patrick Hannon ran into some trouble early in the game, and was replaced by Ryan Goodale after three innings. With the score tied at 4-4, Goodale walked the first batter, and Killingly soon scored a run to take the lead. The final score for the game was 14-7, sending Killingly to the championship game.

This was the first loss for WACH, which means they will take on the winner of a July 11 game on Wednesday, July 13, in the losers’ bracket. The winner of the July 13 game will take on Killingly for the title.

The manager of the Killingly junior league All-Star team is Scott Belanger, with Terry Chappell and Bill Guillot coaching. Team members are: Allen Perron, Christyen Trajanowski, Tre’ Belanger, Troy Chappell, Nick Hewitt, Zack Tarryk, Owen Guillot, Mark Horvath, Henry Hewig, Derek Grzysiewicz and Cory Sipos.
