McDonald's store manager Sarah Boss can see the whole store operation from a command center near the front counter in the Killingly Commons restaurant. She can keep an eye on all the orders and see how many cars are in the drive-thru line. She can tell how crowded the lobby is and see how her crew is doing at their stations.

“You have a thousand things going on at one time,” she said. “You have to be good at multitasking. That's the biggest challenge. You have to make decisions on what you're going to handle first. It can get pretty crazy in here.”

Boss has multitasked her way to receiving an Outstanding Manager Award from the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts McDonald's Owner/Operator Association. Only the top 10 percent of restaurant managers receive this award.

Boss started working at McDonald's in 2003, when she was 18. She worked her way through swing manager and assistant manager positions before settling into store management in January 2009. She is also a training manager for four stores.

“Ninety percent of my managers went up through the ranks,” she said. “They started as crew members. I worked with them and pushed them through the ranks."
