The Mansfield 11-12 All-Star baseball team fought hard to the very end for the District 11 title. They easily won their first two games against Willington (final score 17-2) and Thompson (final score 14-1). On Wednesday, July 6, they took on the Killingly 11-12 All-Stars.
From the outset, it appeared that the two undefeated teams were fairly evenly matched. Killingly scored early, but an out-of-the park home run by Mansfield’s Zach Ziemba scored three runs and put Mansfield on top by a score of 3-1. Mansfield catcher Jake LeFevre just missed increasing that lead with a hit toward center field that dropped just short of the fence, to be caught by Killingly’s centerfielder for the out.
A homerun by Killingly’s Kyle Derosier at the top of the second put Killingly back on top with a score of 4-3. Killingly managed to score just one more run, ending the game with a score of 5-3 and earning Mansfield its first loss of the tournament.
A match-up in the loser bracket against Pomfret handed Mansfield another win, with a final score of 16-5. The team earned another easy win against Putnam, with a final score of 13-2. This brought Mansfield face-to-face with Killingly again, which had moved into the loser bracket after a 10-0 loss against Jewett City. This time Mansfield triumphed over Killingly, with a final score of 8-6, earning them a trip to the championship match-up, where they faced the undefeated Jewett City team. A win by Mansfield(final score 7-6) forced a second game between the teams. This time Mansfield was defeated by a final score of 11-3, ending their season and earning Jewett City the District 11 championship title.
