Among the 9- and-10-year-old local Little League teams, there are a number of towns that sponsor “B” teams in addition to their regular All-Star teams. “It gives the younger kids a chance to get more experience, and to play in an All-Star league,” said Willimantic team coach John Lebiszczak. The “B” teams are currently heading for their championship game, scheduled for July 29. There are four teams participating in the “B” All-Star tournament in District 11. As of press time, the record stood at: Jewett City, 0-4; Norwich, 2-1; Sprague/Franklin/Canterbury (SFC) 1-2; Willimantic, 4-0.
On Monday, July 25, the SFC team took on Jewett City. By the end of the first inning, SFC was ahead by a score of 7-0 before the game was called due to rain. The game was scheduled to continue on July 28.
“The SFC 'B' All Star team is young, mostly made up of 9-year-olds,” said coach James Molkenthin. “They are a scrappy bunch of kids that play hard, run the bases well and play good defense.” The lead pitcher for SFC has been Quinn Ottilige, who was 2-1 going into the game against Jewett City. Providing backup pitching for the team are Nolan Molkenthin, Jake Marsalisi and Ian Santos. Marsalisi looked good on the mound against Jewett City during the short period before the game was called.
“Our offense is lead by Nolan Molkenthin, Gavin Fitch, Aiden Brown and Frank Abreu,” said Molkenthin. Against a struggling Jewett City starting pitcher, SFC’s offense came up big.
Coaches for the Sprague/Franklin/Canterbury “B” All-Star team are: James Molkenthin, Jeff Marsalisi and Tom Ottilige. The SFC “B” All-Stars are: Chad Graley, Joey Graley, Gavin Fitch, Aiden Brown, Nolan Molkenthin, Jake Marsalisi, Ian Santos, Quinn Ottilige, Nic Thetreault, Chris Green and Frank Abreu.
