After the Hebron/Marlborough Bombers AAU basketball team finished up their spring season, they decided to enter the Nutmeg State Games Basketball Tournament the week of Aug. 1. To prepare, the team held weekly practices at Veterans Memorial Park in Hebron.

When the coaches were looking for some preparatory competition right before the games, it was only natural that they thought of the Mansfield travel team. Bombers coach Mike Gonsor contacted Mansfield coach Betsy Parker. “That's when I learned that Betsy runs a summer basketball camp in Mansfield for Mansfield and surrounding town kids,” said Gonsor. The teams were able to work around Parker’s camp schedule, and get together for a couple of friendly games, one at the Mansfield Community Center, one at Veterans Park.

“The game with Mansfield was a natural fit because all our teams were very competitive during the travel season,” said Gonsor. In fact, Mansfield ended up beating Hebron in the final game of the Marlborough March Madness tournament back in March. “The coaches all share a mutual respect for each other and our individual programs,” said Gonsor. “Everyone had an awesome time. It was a great opportunity to get in some fun, competitive basketball and meet some new friends.”

Coaches for the Mansfield team are Betsy Parker and Kate Dale.

Members of the Mansfield team are: Mansfield residents Carlie Cassells, Keeley O’Keefe, McKenna Dale, Abby Vampatella, Lizzie Velazquez, Danielle Christopher, Emily Kaufman, Kaleigh Dale, Marisa Marshall, Rebecca Coyne, Maya Rudd, Caitrin Spottiswoode, Alexa Loree and Emily Lacasse; and Coventry residents Maggie Ziko and Jenna Pappandrea.
