Locally-grown produce and some delicious, homemade shortcake biscuits were paired up on Saturday, Aug. 20, to serve as a peachy treat during Stafford Springs Congregational Church’s annual Peach Shortcake Festival.
A group of women from the church peeled and prepared the fresh peaches, and baked the biscuits earlier in the day.
Each year, the event functions partly as a fundraiser, but is also an occasion to foster fellowship in the Stafford community, according to Cindy Minich, who is one of the church volunteers who organize and carry out the event. The festival helps keep the church visible and accessible to the community, she said.
“If we make money, we make money. If we don’t, that’s not the goal. The goal is fellowship of church members and community,” said Minich.
The outdoor event brought out members of the local community, but also caught the eye of many people who were just “passing through.” Those who came by enjoyed a sense of neighborliness while sampling some good home cooking.
The Stafford Springs Congregational Church was established in 1850 and is located at 3 Main St. in Stafford Springs. It is a member church of the Safe Net Ministries program.
