Early morning rain on their home course at Northwest Park on Sept. 3 did not drench the spirits of Windsor High School’s cross-country team.
Led by six-year head coach Chris Rau and assistant coach Margie Chalmers, the group of approximately 35 young men and women set off for a 3-mile run in preparation for their first match-up against Wethersfield and South Windsor on Sept. 13.
“I would like boys’ team to be above .500 and for the entire team time at Class L Championships to drop by 2 minutes from last year,” Rau commented on his overall goal for the 2011 team. “I hope to have at least one – if not two or three – boys make the State Open. I do not have a defined record goal for the girls’ team yet, but I am counting on my top two girls to make the State Open.”
Seniors Michael Bernard, Rayce Bianchi, Yuri Dominguez, Derek Gaudet, Brian Miele, Will Nelson, Patrick Sponzo, Jay Vibes, Colin Walsh, Liz Calderon, Megan Connelly, Erin Gillane and Medinah Nabadduka will be pivotal to the team’s success, the coach said.
“Our greatest strength is our experience,” Rau said. “A weakness would be pure speed for the boys and depth for the girls.”
Nabadduka is returning for her fourth season. “Since this is my last year, I’d like to see us qualify for states,” she said.
A fellow member of the girls’ team, Sydnee Over, is setting her sights high. “My personal goal is to be named All-State,” she said.
On the boys’ side, senior Derek Gaudet is trying to beat his previous season’s best time of 17.28. Teammate Patrick Sponozo commented on team morale. “We have a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s a good group to be part of.”
Pleased with the team’s commitment to both sports and school work, Rau addressed academic eligibility requirements at WHS. “Students must carry an overall average of 71. I am proud to say our academic record is the past is outstanding,” Rau said. “We frequently have the highest number of athletes make the All-Academic team.”
