Cheerleading is back at Stafford High School this fall, after a temporary absence in 2010. With the squad led by captains Linzey Young, Brooke Learned and Cassidy Aubin, Stafford fans can anticipate spirited sidelines and new dance routines guaranteed to bolster Bulldog pride.

Back for their second season with the team, head coach Kathy Middleton and assistant Tammy Alberts are focusing on building new routines and increasing stunting ability. “The team’s greatest strength is that they are quick learners,” Middleton said. “This allows us to revamp routines, learn new cheers and pull it together quickly.”

Seventeen girls make up the team roster: Cassidy Aubin, Brooke Learned, Linzey Young, Courtney DeNunzio, Maria Spellman, Megan Perrier, Rebecca Novelli, Macy Pellegrino, Katelyn Kasper, Laura DeCarli, Sara Bizil, Erin Gelinas, Danielle Moore, Miranda Brown, Sam DeGennaro, Kelsey Moulton and Heather Moore.

In preparation for competitions slated for February and March, the squad will focus on building its skills with specialized practices. “Our overall goal for the team is to accomplish team tumbling and more difficult stunts,” the coach said. “We will be attending clinics regularly to accomplish these goals.”

Senior captain Brooke Learned, a back spotter, commented on her favorite part of the sport. “The best part of cheering is the stunting, and the more we practice, the more I see what we can accomplish,” she said.

Fellow captain, junior Cassidy Aubin, has cheering in her blood. “My mom was a cheerleader, and it sounded like fun, so that’s how I got started,” she said. “I’m really enjoying all of it, especially the dance routines.”

Middleton places an emphasis on both physical fitness and academics. “Last year, none of the cheerleaders became ineligible academically,” she said. “Our three captains, Brooke Learned, Linzey Young and Cassidy Aubin, are great teachers, and lead by example. Maria Spellman and Megan Perrier have also shown they are good leaders, as well.”
