E.O. Smith volleyball coach Gail Murphy warms up the team before an Oct. 17 game against RHAM.

After putting together a winning season for 2010-11, the E.O. Smith girls’ volleyball team earned a bye for round 1 of the playoffs and a number three seed. They were knocked out during round two, and lost a total of eight seniors after the season.

Co-captains Taylor Vonasek and Morgan Stewart provide senior leadership for this year’s team, with Vonasek also proving to be a driving force offensively.

The Panthers started their season with a 3-0 sweep of Rockville, with Vonasek providing the offensive drive. Since then, their losses have come from Rocky Hill, Tolland and RHAM. During their second match-up against RHAM on Oct. 17, the Panthers never gained the lead. RHAM, defending four consecutive state titles, ended the match in three games. The Panthers currently have a 9-5 record, putting them in the number 13 position in Division L.

The E.O. Smith volleyball team finishes up their regular season at home, with games against Hartford Public (10/20, 5 p.m.), Fermi (10/24, 5:30 p.m.), Bloomfield (10/26, 5 p.m.) and another match-up against Tolland (10/28, 5 p.m.)
