RHAM volleyball put away its fourth consecutive state title last year, with a final game win against Joel Barlow. That win belongs to the team’s seniors, Chloe Rishell and Jocelyn Taylor. This year’s six seniors will be looking for a state title of their own.
Rishell and Taylor played key roles for the 2010-11 championship team, with Rishell providing consistent support both on the court and off, and Taylor ranking as one of the lead players in the state for kills and blocks. But there were plenty of players chomping at the bit, and this year’s team has so far put together another strong season, with 12 wins and only one loss—to Glastonbury (LL Division).
During their second meeting against E.O. Smith on Oct. 17, Sarah Veilleux, who came on the scene red-hot as a freshman last year (159 kills for 2010), was a force to be reckoned with, as she consistently smashed the ball over the net for the kill. Also strong were Kelsey Kirkpatrick and Laura Smolinski. The Sachems finished off the Panthers in three short games, scoring their second victory over E.O. Smith for the season.
RHAM is currently ranked number one in Division L, with Platt hot on their heels with a 13-2 record.
RHAM boasts a number of top-10 statistical leaders, including: Sarah Veilleux (#5 in kills, with 104), Laura Smolinski (#2 in assists, with 213), Francesca Mack (#6 in blocks, with 25) and Kara Trippel (#6 in digs, with 88).
The RHAM volleyball head coach is Tim Guernsey, with Shaun Keane assisting. Seniors on this year’s team are: Laura Smolinski, Kelsey Kirkpatrick, Alicia Tripoli, Kara Trippel, Theresa Kowall and Jen Roberts.
Catch the RHAM volleyball team at home against Rockville on Friday, Oct. 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m. For a full season schedule go to www.casciac.org.
