The unseasonable snowstorm that struck Connecticut just prior to Halloween did more than just turn out the lights and heat for thousands around the state. It also wreaked havoc with the end-of season tournament schedule for high school athletes, even those in areas relatively unaffected by the storm.
Officials from the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) pushed back tournament dates for fall sports, in consideration of student-athletes who have been unable to practice because of school closures. The “last date to count” in regular-season play for most sports was moved one week, to Nov. 8. In addition, meets and games were allowed for Sunday, Nov. 6, in an effort to make up postponed competitions.
The state cross-country tournament, which got underway the day of the snowstorm, was called off before all races could be completed, leaving Class S girls’ teams, including Griswold and St. Bernard, to make up the race at a later date. The CIAC state open championship for both boys and girls was slated to run at Hammonasset State Park, in Madison, on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Pairings for tournaments were to be announced on Wednesday, Nov.9. The Griswold boys’ soccer team was slated to play its first round in the tournament away, against a yet-unnamed opponent on Friday. Second, quarter- and semi-final rounds are scheduled for Nov. 14, 16 and 19 respectively.
The girls’ soccer team was to meet its first-round opponent on home turf on Thursday. Subsequent rounds for the girls will be played on Nov. 12, 15 and 18.
The finals for both boys’ and girls’ soccer will be Nov. 25-26, the two days immediately following Thanksgiving.
The football Wolverines are still in regular-season play, said Griswold athletic director Glen LaBossiere. The girls’ volleyball team did not qualify for post-season tournament play.
