Patrons of the Near The Lake Café got a special treat on Saturday, Nov. 26: the debut of the newly-formed power trio, Beyond Repair, from Ludlow, Mass. It was the coming together of three seasoned professionals who provided a sparkling potpourri of pop, rock and reggae music.
The band is led by guitarist/vocalist Maggie Lach, a native of Krakow, Poland, and now a classical guitar and piano teacher at Mount Holyoke, her alma mater. She has worked with drummer Matt Thompson on any number of projects in the Springfield era, but the Beyond Repair concept came together instantly with the addition of southpaw bassist Owen Santy.
“There was just something extremely natural happening,” said Lach. “There was no real work involved at all. We just kind of fed off each other and our playlist came together in days, rather than weeks or months.”
Thompson and Santy share more than their music, though both have been playing since they were kids. They are also disabled Marine veterans: Thompson of the Vietnam War and Santy of Panama, Desert Storm and Somalia.
One of Santy’s injuries was to that left hand. “Oh man, I thought I would never play again,” he said. “It was so painful it was hard to just pick up a cup of coffee. Thankfully, the efforts of my VA care provider and lots of therapy did the trick and now it feels like nothing was ever wrong with it.”
