Bundled in layers of Bulldog blue, the Stafford High School senior cheerleaders were recognized on Nov. 18 for their many contributions to both the football season, and to student spirit.

Along with their parents, seniors Courtney DeNunzio, Brooke Learned and Linzey Young were called to the 50-yard line at halftime by Athletic Director Damian Frassinelli and were presented with flowers by coach Tammy Alberts.

Head coach Kathleen Middleton commented on DeNunzio, a base spotter for Stafford: “Courtney has been a cheerleader for one season, and you wouldn’t know it by the amount of skill she has acquired in such a short time,” Middleton said. “She has a lot of spirit - her sense of humor keeps us all smiling!”

DeNunzio said her love for her teammates is what made the season special. “Since this is my first year, I was not sure what to expect, but the girls are great,” she said.

“Brooke has been cheering for all four years,” Middleton said regarding Learned. “She is an excellent back spot with a lot of strength. She is an excellent leader, always spirited and willing to help anyone.”

Learned addressed the team’s improving stunting abilities, which is always a challenge in cheering. “We have accomplished many new stunts this season,” she said. “I’m very proud of what we were able to do since the start of the year.”

Young overcame a knee injury early on, remaining the team’s top flyer. “Linzey is a four-year cheerleader and has an enormous amount of dedication to the team,” Middleton said. “She is an experienced flyer with a high level of determination to accomplish her personal goals, and is an excellent leader and example for new cheerleaders.”

Young listed her favorite moments this season: “I love being at all the games and performing, especially at halftime,” she said.

In the Nov. 18 game, Stafford was down by 14 early in the half. When asked for her thoughts on the game, Young beamed, “They told me they were going to win; I know they will.”

Stafford came back in a last-minute 22-21 victory over Gilbert.
