Stafford High School fall sports ended 2011 on a high note.

The boys’ cross-country team placed 20th overall at the CIAC Class S meet on Oct. 29 at Wickham Park in Manchester. Teammates Matt Moore, Charles Cormier, Brenden Goodwin, Brent Kalette, Ben Gluck, Austin Elliott and Lou Arruda finished with 550 points and a combined time of 1:54:08. In the regular season, senior and first-year runner Shaina Wilson recorded a best time of 22:31.

Girls’ soccer ended at 4-10-1. Early in the season, junior Lauren Webb said, “I’m hoping to be more of a leader this year.” Those words proved true, as both Webb and fellow junior Kianna Woods were named to the CIAC All-Conference team. Rachel Caneen was named Stafford’s assistant coach of the year.

Coach Rob Schadt and the boys’ soccer team finished at 2-12. Seniors Kyle Pallanck, Tucker Carlson, Joe Rossi, Nick Dent and Dan Lemire were honored on Senior Night.

With a 9-5 record, coach Elaine Boldi and assistant coach Kim Soucy led girls’ field hockey back to the CIAC Class S tournament, where the team fell in a closely-fought 3-1 loss to Stonington. Marita Brothers and Jessica Simpson were named to the All-Conference team. Brothers was additionally named to the All-State team. Vivian Ojeda was named an All-State Scholar-Athlete. Members of the field hockey team participated in the Play for the Cure game, raising more than $2,800 for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer.

After a slow start, coach Corey Bernier and the football team finished strong with a late season string of wins. At 5-5, the Bulldogs named Tim Artruc - LB, Zach Rollins - DB, Rick Riley - DL, Beau Weed - OL, Honorable Mention Shane McCuen - OL and Emerson Dolby - LB to the CIAC Class S All-Conference team. Beyond the playing field, team members pitched in after tropical storm Irene, filling sandbags and donating time to residents in need.

Cheerleading wrapped up with the last home football game on Nov. 18. A competition team is now in gearing up for basketball season.
