“That guy is killing us,” said a voice from the East Hampton side of the crowd, as Michael Barrett, the 6-foot guard for the Old Saybrook Running Rams boys’ basketball team sprinted down the court for a layup. Those were just two of the game-high 24 points Barrett scored in his team’s 62-48 victory over the East Hampton Bellringers last Monday, Jan. 9, at East Hampton High School. The win avenges a 46-41 loss the Rams took against the Bellringers in late December, in a game also played at East Hampton High School.

Leading by as much as seven points late in the first half, the Bellringers went into the locker room with a slim one-point lead, 27-26, as the Rams began a 14-0 scoring run near the end of the half that extended into the second half. Cold shooting and eventual foul trouble in the second half allowed the Rams to pull away in the fourth quarter and take home the victory.

With 18 points, sophomore Matt Vasquenza led the East Hampton team, which goes into North Branford for a game this Thursday with a 3-5 record. With the victory, Old Saybrook improves to 5-4 on the season.
