It was the battle of the unbeaten on Jan. 19, as number one-ranked E.O. Smith (maxpreps.com) took on number two-ranked Tolland High School at E.O. Smith. Both teams came in with zero losses for the season.

Kristin Schatzlein, who averages 18.4 points per game for Tolland, had already scored 18 points during the first quarter, which ended with E.O. Smith behind by a score of 23-18. E.O. Smith was clearly having a difficult time containing the powerful Schatzlein.

Then E.O. Smith coach Kirk Murad made the decision to bring Alexa Manaskie into the game. Manaskie stuck to Schatzlein like glue, and managed to hold her to an additional 7 points throughout the remainder of the game. The final score was 62-51, giving Tolland its first loss and continuing E.O. Smith’s winning streak.

Murphy Murad was red-hot as E.O. Smith’s leading scorer, with a total of 22 points. Captain Ashley Forand and center Morgan Olander racked up 11 points each for the team.

The high scorer for Tolland was Schatzlein, with a total of 25 points.

Tolland and E.O. Smith will meet again on Feb. 13, at Tolland High School, beginning at 7 p.m.
