After beating East Granby, 60-33, on Feb. 2, the Ellington High School girls' varsity basketball team is now 14-2 and likely to be one of the top seeds in the class M tournament.

Coach Lauren Lovetere-Beeler said despite the team's success, they are still working on fine-tuning.

“We keep saying 'perfection,'” she said. “We're good at everything, but we need to work on perfecting a couple of things if we're going to make it far in the tournament.”

The past two weeks have actually been difficult for the team, as they have played opponents with weaker records and haven't been as “battle-tested,” and the coach decided to turn up the heat against East Granby, in order to prepare for some tougher opponents at the end of the schedule.

“We've been winning by a good margin the past two weeks, so today we really worked on perfecting some things to go into next week,” she said, after the game. “Next week we have Avon and Suffield and we really need to win both to come out #1 in the conference. We're really working on perfecting the defense and the fast break.”

Lovetere-Beeler said she had been giving her starters some more resting time but those days are over.

“I need to get them back into game shape, because they had rested a lot,” she said.

The mindset of the team is focused on winning the NCCC banner first, Lovetere-Beeler said, and of course the team is excited.

“I think they're feeling good,” she said. “I think they're getting a little nervous for next week. There's pressure on them to win. We've pretty much got to win against Suffield and we'll see how it goes.”

The Knights host Avon on Feb. 8 and travel to Suffield on Feb. 10.
