The Lady Tomahawks' 42-29 win over Windsor in the last game of the regular season on Feb. 15 didn't come as easily as the score might indicate. The Warriors lead 10-7 after the first quarter, just 9 combined points were scored in the second, and it was 13-13 at the half. But the Tomahawks came out swinging in the second half with 8 unanswered points and never looked back.
“It was just a slow start,” said coach Brian Fleming, adding that a quick pep talk at halftime was just what his team needed. “We talked about just reacting and being basketball players,” he said. “We just made some plays and got some things going, as well as getting some great defense off the bench.”
Fleming said it was good to finish the season on a positive note, and the team is focusing on playing its own brand of basketball as it prepares to take on tournament teams. “We'll take a look at the scouting reports,” Fleming said, “but then just try to do what we do well. We're not so much worried about who we have.”
While optimistic, the team's mindset is on their next game, without being overly-worried or overconfident. “They played with a little more tournament-like intensity,” he said. “We've been talking about tournament-like focus – coming up with loose balls and going possession by possession. I think we did that in the second half, so I think we're prepared.”
With a record of 14-6, Glastonbury should enter the Class LL tournament with a seeding around 10-14, which would mean they are “lying in the weeds,” according to Fleming.
“It's not as high as we'd like, but as I've been saying all year, we could lose to anybody, but we could beat anybody, too,” he said. “We're looking to get on a run and hopefully ruin a few teams' seasons.”
