Even though their official practices don't start until next month, members of the boys' and girls' varsity track team took advantage of the unseasonably warm temperatures to get out on the track and start getting ready for the upcoming season last week.

“Last year this time, we couldn't even hold our first two weeks of practice because of the snow,'' said AJ Laplant, who coaches the girls' varsity track team. This year, the team is out on the track doing various warm-ups and short drills. Some members of the team are already in shape after a season of indoor track, while just as many others are getting out on the track for the first time this school year.

“This weather is definitely helping us get a leg up on the season,'' Laplant said. “We have about 15 to 20 people who are returning, and a good amount of freshman who are coming out for the first time.'' March 19 will be the official start of the season, the coach said.

Laplant said the team ended last year's outdoor season with several players making it into the state finals. “Our sprinters, jumpers and shot-putters - that's what the East Hartford team is known for,'' Laplant said.

Tyra Givens is coming out for the track team for the first time. “I'm out here because I just want to get shape,'' Givens said. “I want to do shot-put and disc.''

Xiana Mebane is also coming out for track for the first time. "I just want to get in shape, get faster and better, and be ready.''
