The E.O. Smith lady Panthers are headed to the Mohegan Sun for the second year in a row after a victory on March 12 against Berlin High School. The number one-seeded Pathers defeated Berlin (number four seed) by a score of 63-52. They will face number three-seeded Bacon Academy on March 16 or 17 at Mohegan Sun Arena, details not yet determined at press time.
Bacon enters the finals after a 50-49 victory over Pomperaug (number two seed) on March 12. E.O. Smith and Bacon will compete for the Class L state championship title. “The Panthers used a 21-0 run over the last two minutes of the first quarter and the first five minutes of the second quarter to turn a 13-8 deficit into a 29-13 lead and were in control from there,” said E.O. Smith coach Kirk Murad. “Berlin had one more run in them, and cut the Panthers' lead to four early in the third quarter, 34-30,” said Murad, “but another Panther run of 16-2 put the game away.” Murad said that senior forward Taylor Vonasek led a balanced attack with 15 points. Sophomore guard Holly Worski came off the bench to add 13 points and six steals, while senior center Morgan Olander had 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists and five blocked shots. Junior guard Murphy Murad contributed eight points, four assists and three steals, while senior guard Alexa Manaskie had six assists to go along with five points.
