Heading into a game against RHAM High School on April 23, the E.O. Smith girls’ softball team had a record of 1-5. “We’ve played all the top teams, pretty much, in the state,” said assistant coach Dave Ridzon. And, he added, the Panthers have held their own against most of them.
Rocky Hill, taken on by the Panthers on April 18, beat them by a score of 3-0. “We played ‘em tough,” said Ridzon. Rocky Hill currently has a 5-0 record. Rockville, with a 7-0 record, was another tough opponent for the Panthers. The final score for that game was 2-0. “So we’ve held our own,” said Ridzon.
Last year, the team went 12 and 8, and lost in the first round of the state tournament. They’ll be looking to win some games during the post-season this time around. “We’re very solid in pitching,” said Ridzon, adding that the team has performed very well defensively so far, as well. “Offense seems to be our weakness,” said Ridzon. As they progress through the season, they will be riding their pitching and defense, said Ridzon.
But the Panthers managed to generate some hits against RHAM, coming home with an 11-0 victory to add to their record. With only four seniors, two of whom have significant varsity experience, “We’re a young team,” said Ridzon. “The toughest part is getting them used to playing at the varsity level.”
The Panthers will play at home on Friday, April 27, against Fermi, beginning at 3:45 p.m.
The seniors on this year’s team are Sara Rup, Brianna Cordero, Rachel Gagnon and Peyton Holman.
E.O. Smith’s head coach is Mike Mellody, with Dave Ridzon assisting.
