Fifteen-year East Granby High School softball coach Carl Ferrara summed up the 2012 roster with one, simple phrase: “These kids are more than a team – they’re family.”
Currently at 6-2, the Crusaders are hitting the mid-season mark on an up note. “We have a phenomenal group this year,” Ferrara said. “The girls truly gel together, on and off the field. They come out here every day and encourage each other through the ups and downs; it really shows.”
Assisted by coaches Kim Chamberlin and Brian Glamzina, Ferrara explained the team talent spreads equally over the four classes. “The skill of the players is universal this year,” he said. “In fact, I had a parent tell me if he were watching the game without knowing the kids, he wouldn’t be able to tell the freshmen from the upperclassmen.”
From behind the plate, senior catcher and team captain Anna Glassman is Ferrara’s leader. “Anna is a very solid ball player and was All-Conference last year. She’s got good hit speed and is someone the team looks up to,” the coach said. In the number-three spot, Glassman is one of the East Granby’s top hitters.
In addition to Glassman, Ferrara listed several senior players to watch. In the lead-off spot, senior Taylor Seelan is the Crusaders’ table setter. At second, Michelle Raabe is described by the coaching staff as an outrageous, upbeat player. Batting ninth and playing left field, Haylee Kulig has great speed, and Jolene Bascom returns to the squad for her fourth season, this year as DH.
Upcoming talent has emerged on the East Granby bench from sophomore Jessica Grabinsky and juniors Allysa Gileau and Hannah Clark. “Alyssa is playing third,” Ferrara said. “She’s got a great arm and is a terrific ballplayer.” At shortstop, Grabinsky is batting clean-up and currently holds the school home run record.
After road games with Stafford (May 9) and Bolton (May 10), East Granby returns home to face East Windsor on May 14. A full schedule can be found at www.casciac.org.
