The E.O. Smith varsity baseball team finished the 2010-11 season with a 5-15 record - not strong enough to qualify for post-season play. This year, the Panthers will be looking to improve upon that record with a slightly smaller roster and a slightly less-experienced team.

Four out of the team’s five seniors are returning varsity players. There are several strong juniors who are returning varsity players this year, as well.

Heading into May, the team had captured four of the eight wins they need to qualify for this year’s state tourney. At a game against RHAM on April 24, pitching seemed to be the team’s weakness, as the Panthers went through the majority of their pitching roster. The Panthers held their own early in the game, producing a couple of runs and holding the Sachems to just a couple of their own. But a midgame offensive tear by RHAM brought the final outcome to 8-2 RHAM.

The head coach for the 2011-12 E.O. Smith varsity baseball team is Mike Susi. The seniors on the team are Kyle McMahon, Frankie Wunschel, Ryan Cronin, Alex Lefevre and Justin Kaeser.

Catch a rematch of the Panthers vs. the Sachems at RHAM on Friday, May 11, beginning at 3:45 p.m.
