It’s always fun to involve the kids in a small gardening project. You will keep them active outdoors while also teaching them about nature, and they will get to see plants grow and change on a daily basis.

To help children plant a sunny flower garden, you will need a small patch of land with good sun exposure, a shovel, bagged compost, small plants from a nursery, a trowel and water, either from a hose or a watering can.

The first thing you should do is to take a trip to your local garden center or plant nursery. You are looking for small, healthy annuals to purchase. You will be transplanting them to your garden and watching them grow, so choose some that are not yet flowering.

Find a spot for your garden that gets at least six hours of sun a day. Have the kids help you pull up weeds and large rocks, and dig up the soil to make it loose and workable.

Next, spread a 1-inch layer of the bagged compost mixture over the soil and mix it in using the trowel.

Have the children help you arrange the plants on the bed. Give the young plants plenty of room, and think about what colors would look the best together.

With your trowel, dig a hole for each plant. Carefully turn the pot over, and tap the plant into your hand. Then loosen the root ball with your fingers, and set the roots into the hole in the soil.

Water the plants every few days, or when the soil feels dry to the touch.

Once your new plants begin to grow and flower, be sure to pick the flowers often to keep the plants blooming consistently.

This activity is easy and fun for kids, and it just might inspire a lifetime of gardening.
