Despite relative inexperience, the RHAM Sachems are putting together a very strong 2011-12 baseball season. “We have an inexperienced team with only three starters who saw significant playing time returning,” said head coach Paul Steiner. But despite their youth, the Sachems had put together a 12-2 record heading into a home game on May 10 against Tolland.
The Tolland game broke a seven-game winning streak for the Sachems, largely due to mistakes in the field, according to assistant coach Tim Guernsey. “We had a bunch of errors,” said Guernsey. The final score of the game was 6-2 Tolland.
“I’m not going to say they didn’t play well, because they did,” said Steiner. “We just needed to make the routine plays. We’ve been doing that all year. We just didn’t do it this time.”
The Sachems didn’t have a lot of time to regroup, with a home game scheduled against E.O. Smith the very next day, May 11. The Sachems had beaten the Panthers once before, during an 8-2 victory on April 24. The coach was hopeful that his players would be able to regroup and pull out another victory. “We’ve been pretty consistent all season,” said Steiner. “We’ve had some low points, like yesterday, but this is a great group of kids who are working really, really hard.”
The Sachems pulled out another win against E.O. Smith, with a final score of 1-0.
The seniors on the RHAM varsity baseball team are Scott Anderson, Casey Barrett, Brandon Henley, Cody DePersia, Matt Sylia, Joel Hara and Aaron Tierney.
RHAM’s last home game is scheduled for Friday, May 18, beginning at 4 p.m.
