By the time a thunderstorm forced a nearly 90-minute rain delay in the quarterfinal game against New London on June 3, RHAM pitcher Baylor LaPointe had kept his team in the game with the assistance of a defense that came through at key moments. With a total of five hits, one walk and 13 strikeouts, LaPointe had been doing his job, despite a lack of offensive action from the Sachems. The run in the 1-0 RHAM victory came at the bottom of the fourth, when a single by Travis Salois sent Mario Fontanella home.
Both LaPointe and New London pitcher Reynaldo Sierra got out of jams after the rain delay in the fifth. Sierra threw a strike out in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on third for the final out. LaPointe got out of a jam in both the sixth and seventh innings, throwing strikeouts in the seventh, after New London put men on first and third with only one out.
The win advanced RHAM (number two seed) to the semifinal round against Fitch (number three seed). The game was scheduled for Tuesday, June 5, at 7 p.m., at Palmer Field in Middletown.
