It’s that time again, and with the coming of the new school year comes a new season of fall sports. E.O. Smith High School had a number of optional pre-season conditioning dates scheduled for athletes, including sessions on Aug. 20 through 23 at Farrell Field for soccer and field hockey players. A large group of girls turned out the evening of Aug. 20 for the first of these sessions, leaving coaches hopeful for a similarly large turnout over the weekend for team assignments.
“Turnout has been lower than usual for the past couple of years,” said assistant varsity soccer coach Dave White, as athletes paused for a water break. “We could really use a lot more players this year.”
E.O. Smith girls officially begin their season on Sept. 5 with a scrimmage against Manchester. Their first game is Sept. 11 against Simsbury. E.O. Smith varsity soccer boys also begin the season with a scrimmage on Sept. 5, with the first official game of the season scheduled for Sept. 11 against Farmington.
E.O. Smith varsity field hockey players (some of whom also attended the Aug. 20 conditioning session) begin their season with a scrimmage on Sept. 5, with the first game of the season scheduled for Sept. 12 against Somers.
