The Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby Raider football team completed the 2011 season record with a 1-9 record and a 10th-place finish in the Pequot Uncas division. The Raiders were a few bounces and key plays away from finishing in the middle of the pack - a few key plays they think they can make this season to catapult themselves near the top of the division.
“We’re hoping to win a lot of games this year,” said Trystan Cauley, senior running back. “It’s exciting to see your teammates come out hard and the leaders – the captains – come out ready. It makes you go. It’s made us work harder to improve upon last year. Our skill level has improved and it’s going to help us win this season.”
The strength of the Raiders during the 2012 season will be on the defensive side of the ball. The Raiders pride themselves on playing sideline to sideline with great tenacity. They believe that their defense will be the key to their offensive success, saying if they can force turnovers and give the offense good field position, then the offense will be able to go out and make plays to put points on the board.
“Our defense is going to help carry us throughout the season, especially because of our aggressiveness,” said Jesse Rocheleau, senior captain and tackle. “Our defense will be there to help us when our offense isn’t clicking like we know it can.”
The Raiders' offensive attack will be led by Cauley, the team’s feature tail back who provided no shortage of highlight reel plays and running touchdowns last season. Cauley will share the back field with Austin Kingsbury, a tough-nosed downfield runner who does not shy away from contact. The offense will be run by junior quarterback Agostino Jimenez, who will look to senior captain and wide receiver Brady Schoener to make some plays on the outside.
“Our attitude towards playing has improved a lot,” Schoener said. “We have enthusiasm on the field and we're focusing and working hard. The seniors and captains are doing it right the first time to set an example for the rest of the team.”
The Raiders' 2012 campaign begins at home on Saturday, Sept. 15, against the Housatonic-Wamogo Mountaineers.
